Special Issue on
ELT in difficult circumstances: challenges, possibilities and future directions
The multicultural and multilingual character of a country like India where diversity is the norm rather than the exception, needs a carefully thought-out and sound language policy in education. Policy makers and practitioners standing at this intersectional crossroad have to realize the importance of grasping the complexity of multilingualism as a concept, and how it can be practically enacted within the four walls of the classroom in India where diversity of languages is a norm and not an exception. Language policies in India have always recognized the status, importance and function of English both at the local and global level and therefore introduced it as one of the 3 languages to be studied in the Indian classroom, be it at the school level or at the college level. NEP 2020 has also recognized the multilingual character of the Indian classroom and therefore focused on using the multilingual fabric of the Indian classroom as a resource rather than as a pathology or a liability. However, there are not many research studies or scholarly papers available on how to transact/negotiate this resource in the actual classroom. The NEP 2020 has not given English language the space it deserves in a multilingual curriculum and its relationship with other Indian languages, and how they can grow together in each other’s company. It is therefore important to discuss the various ramifications of such a confluence coherently and objectively.
The January 2025 issue of Fortell calls for papers that explore the challenges and opportunities offered by the multilingual classrooms. The issue will therefore invite papers that will focus on
- Research in multilingualism in India and in other countries, and takeaways from them
- Experiments in multilingualism in diverse contexts
- The role of English in the multilingual classroom and the strategies needed to achieve optimal results
- A critique of policy documents on multilingualism and the system’s (un)preparedness
- Professional development of teachers for the new challenges
- Developing teaching materials for the multilingual classroom
- Assessing and evaluating students’ performance.
